The Development of Contemporary Ceramics in Saskatchewan

Location: Humboldt and District Gallery

This exhibition is curated by Heather Smith, organized by the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery and toured through OSAC’s Arts on the Move program.

Since the 1960’s there has been an explosion of craftspeople and artists working with clay in Saskatchewan. It is as if this movement sprang from nowhere, but actually there are some very good reasons why making art out of clay has been so successful here. The craft-focussed community education programming of the 1950’s-era Saskatchewan Arts Board, the abundance of local clay, the network of provincial craft sales, the appreciative audience, and the interest in regional art in the 1970’s have all played an important part.

This exhibition will explore and present the work of the following artist/crafts people or collaborative partnerships that have played a pivotal role in the development of ceramics in Saskatchewan: Hansen-Ross Pottery, Beth Hone, Marilyn Levine, Randy Woolsey, Victor Cicansky, Jack Sures, Donavon Chester, Charley Farrero, Mel Bolen, Wendy Parsons/Zach Dietrich, Anita Rocamora, Rob Froese, and Zane Wilcox.

This exhibition is made up of three-dimensional works.
