Joseph Anderson & Lissa Robinson. Toured and Organized by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC).
Joseph Anderson and Lissa Robinson have developed a series of fabric sculptures that allude to mythological creatures from sky to sea. Both playful and sinister, their works employ traditional and improvised sewing techniques. While these sculptures are not literal representations of human-animal hybrids, they make subtle reference to surreal and mythological hybrids such as Mermaids or Griffiths. The artists both use second-hand fabric and/or deconstructed clothing as a way to make links between their fictional animals and the human body.
In “Creatures from Sky to Sea,” Anderson & Robinson have developed a thematic contrast between air and water to develop their unusual menagerie of avian-like and underwater creatures. Using the texture of various fabrics, formal constructions and decorative ornamentation, the soft sculptures will allude to feathers, pointy beaks, tentacles and shimmering gills.
The exhibit Creatures From Sky to Sea is brought to the Humboldt Gallery by the Humboldt Area Arts Council and OSAC and sponsored by Conexus.
